Amazing Summer Camps 2017!

Weekly, from June 19th – August 18th in Southern Marin.
Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 2:00pm, with extended care available. 

Joy of Dance Ballet School offers a wonderful, fanciful, creative day camp program for 10 weeks this summer. 

These inspiring camps welcome boys and girls and use themes from famous ballets such as Swan Lake, Coppélia, The Nutcracker, and Carnival of Animals to expose campers to music, choreography and art experiences that broaden their understanding of dance, art and themselves.

Our sessions have no more than 15 children in attendance so there is ample individual attention for each camper.

Our mission is to offer a camp that awakens young dancers to the beauty, grace, and joy of ballet, while being creative, and HAVING LOTS OF FUN!!

  • Teacher: Jacqueline Low has over 38 years of experience as a ballet and modern dancer, teacher and choreographer.

  • Ages: All camps are open to children Ages: 3 to 12 years old. Attendees that are between the ages of 9 to 12 will become, “Dance Assistants in Training.” A fun opportunity for older students to mentor the younger ones while learning.

Summer Dance Camp, Week 01 Our camp begins with the most popular ballet of all ballets-

Swan lake: Music by Tchaikovsky, this famous ballet based on a Russian folktale tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by a sorcerer’s spell.

An alternate theme for this week is Mamma Mia, a musical based on ABBA songs!

Summer Dance Camp, Week 02 The theme for this week is the fun and beloved ballet-

The Nutcracker: Music by Tchaikovsky, this popular ballet explains how the Prince was turned into the Nutcracker and through many adventures in beautiful fanciful lands, the young heroine Marie follows him until he is transformed to his usual self.

An alternate for this week is the Carnival of Animals, a musical suite of fourteen movements with fourteen different types of animals by the French composer Camille Saint-Saens.

Summer Dance Camp, Week 05 Our theme this week is full of humor and theater!

Coppelia;  is a comic ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to the music of  Léo Delibes. The synopsis; Dr. Coppélius is a doctor who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village youth, becomes infatuated with it and sets aside his true heart’s desire, Swanhilda. She shows him his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor.

As an alternate for this week, students will create a ballet with the theme of Fluttering faeries based on faerie scenes from famous ballets.

Summer Dance Camp, Week 08 This week the theme is full of humor and theater!

As an alternate for this week, we will work on pieces from The Firebird, music by Stravinsky.

Firebird synopsis; The ballet centers on the journey of its hero, Prince Ivan, who strays into a magical realm. On his journey, he is given an enchanted feather…

Typical Daily Schedule

9:00 am – 9:15 am – Welcome children, talk about the day and week.

9:15 am – 10:15 am – Ballet stretching and strengthening exercises as well as Ballet barre.

10:15 am – 10:45 am – Bathroom/ snack time/ read books.

10:45 am – 12:15 am – Art related to the ballet theme of the week, fun theater exercises, work on choreography.

12:15 pm – 1 pm – Lunch. Outside play and dress up creative play.

1 pm – 2 pm – Either watch a DVD of the ballet they are studying or read stories about the ballet of the week.

2 pm – Closing the day activities, pick-up time.
